Watch basketball all the time, especially college, you'll be able to see defenses and plays being run. Also playing video games can teach you plays as well. I knew nothing about football plays until Madden, now I feel like I could coach the Dolphins!! But watch as much basketball as you can and ask someone has played in your system at high school, they already know the plays and could probably explain it to you better than you could watch it and understand it.
you can write them in a piece of paper after the coach explained it...
thats how im doing it...
it hard to keep it all on your head when you have a short term memory

Memory exercises might help. How can I improve my ability to quickly and accurately learn basketball plays?

bball not ur thing?
not only would you have to practice the plays, but also study them when your not on the court. Most plays can't be performed accurately after one practice so repitition is the main technique to learn basketball plays.
A few tips:
- get a coaching book and read it thoroughly. Once you better understand the principles behind certain types of offenses, it will make more sense in certain plays why you do different things.
- tape a few games and watch player movement (especially when the player doesn't have the ball). Try to pick up on patterns.
- play as much ball as possible. like with the coaching book, the better you understand why players move and pass the way they do in basic offenses and plays, the better you will be able to figure out how to run your plays.
