My school, which produced college and soon to be NBA star Rudy Gay, does a lot of plyometrics. This is mostly explosive movements meant to make the muscles of the legs stronger. For instance, broad jumps are a great way to increase vertical leap. To do these, place your feet about shoulder width apart and go into a stance like you're doing squats trying to stay as low as possible while keeping your feet flat on the ground. Then, explode out of your stance and jump as far forward as possible. This may sound like it doesn't work, but trust me you will feel and see results. Look up plyometrics in a yahoo or google search for other exercises like this.
Here's something that will help you immensely. THis is my old "secret workout" from my ball playing days in college. Check this out. Push ups, running, swimming if you have access to a pool, and, sit ups. It works. Set a timer, or, watch for 2 minutes, Do as many push ups as you can, without compromising form. Do this every morning, and, every night. Don't waste time lifting weights, unless your coach tells you to do so. If that happens cut out the early morning pushups. Do the same for sit-ups. 2 minutes on the clock, and knock out as many as you can. You can do crunches if you prefer. As far as runnning. Run the court 15 times without stopping, slowing down is fine, but, do not stop. Once you are done, proceed to a track, or, football field, run 10 20 yard dashes as fast as you can. This will build explosiveness, seriously, it works. You can take a break after each 20 yard dash, but, once you decide to do one, do it as fast as you can. Swimming, if you can mix in 10 laps of swimming as fast as you can, it will work wonders for your stamina. Only swim on the days that you do not run. Since you sould run on 4 to 5 days, you should only swim on 2 to 3 days. I used this very workout my senior year in high school, and, all through college where I averaged 18pts, 6 boards and, 4 steals a game, coming off of the bench. By the way, in high school, I averaged 25 pts, 7 boards, and, 6 steals a game. yeah, I was pretty good for a bench warmer.
basketball. no other workout actually simulates it very well because of the stoping and starting and changing of direction and speed, and then jumping aswell. just find asmany teams as you can in your local area and work out with all of them, thats how i did it and i never get out of breath in a game anymore.
I put together a year-round training program for basketball players that works on strength, speed, agility, power, explosiveness, and many more athletic skills.
